JOHN WILLIAMS on concert music

Writing concert music can be very liberating because the constraints of time and schedule are not there, and I'm not being careful about the idiom and the language that I feel, rightly or wrongly, obliged to use in the film world. The fact that my concert work, so to speak, is in a different musical language than my film music seems to be a natural part of what my progression and my education has been.  Writing concert works, I would say, has had more to do with my own curiosity and my own growth.

Music is a gift to us from providence… something to be enjoyed, something to be learned and studied and practiced. It is a place to find true solace. Music at its best can transport us to a non-corporal world. The process of writing music is not necessarily emotional for me but is largely a process of work – of making, of carving on a stone, of finding a shape for the piece.

The romantic idea that we compose concert works in an emotional state is something that I'm not very familiar with. In that sense, it might raise the question ‘Is the 19th-century romantic myth really a myth?’

It very well may have been.
